NOTES

1 -- In addition to his work as an upholsterer, George Wevill also engaged in various political activities, several of which were noted in the Philadelphia newspapers, such as:

4 -- On 17 Nov. 1874, Dr. Richard Henry Wevill, a Philadelphia physician, was summoned to the home of a female patient of his. While there, the patient's husband (Christian Hansen) rushed in with a loaded pistol and a sheet of paper (which was a declaration acknowledging the doctor's improper conduct with Mrs. Hansen) and demanded Dr. Wevill sign the paper. He refused, and in the fracas Dr. Wevill was shot in the left knee, an injury which required amputation. See The New York Times, 20 Nov. 1874, p. 5. A description of the wound and the amputation appears in Philadelphia Medical Times, 5 Dec. 1874, p. 151.
