NOTES

1 -- For biographical information about Henry Lewis Stephens, see NCAB 5:411, Appleton's Cyc Bio 1888, p. 666. He was art editor of Vanity Fair 1859-1863, and is often, and incorrectly, called a "transplanted Englishman".

2 -- William Stephens was a historian of yachting and was Editor of Lloyd's Register of American Yachts. At his death he was the oldest subscriber to the Metropolitan Opera, having been a subscriber since its first season in 1883. See The New York Times, 11 May 1946, p. 23.

3 -- See The New York Times, 27 Aug. 1942, p. 19.

4 -- In 1900, Frank Stephens, a sculptor, Will Price, an architect, and Joseph Fels, a soap manufacturer, purchased 162 acres of land in North Wilmington, Del., and called it Arden. The community there was to be run communally under the single-tax theories of Henry George (1839-1897) and implementing the Arts and Crafts principles of William Morris (1834-1896). See http://www.theardens.com for further details.

Caroline Eakins was a sister of the noted painter Thomas Cowperthwaite Eakins (1844-1916), whose career was destroyed on 9 Feb. 1886, when Frank Stephens accused him (Eakins) of bestiality and incest (with a different sister).

Biographical material on Frank Stephens can be found at http://jnjreid.com/cdb/stephens.html and at Mark Taylor, "Utopia by Taxation: Frank Stephens and the Single Tax Community of Arden, Delaware, The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, vol. 126, no. 2 [April 2002], pp. 305-325, available at http://www.jstor.org/stable/20093532.

8 -- Henry Stephens Eddy was an artist of some fame. See The New York Times, 11 Aug. 1944, p. 15.

9 -- This marriage provides a link to a family which has long been prominent in the history of American progressives, subversives, and entertainers.

For instance, Harold Ware (who died as a consequence of a car crash on 9 Aug 1935 on the Gettysburg Pike, near York Springs, Pa. [Obit Washington Times, Tue 13 Aug 1935, p. 11]), was the founder of the Soviet espionage cell ("the Ware group") which included Whittaker Chambers and Alger Hiss (and others). For biographical information on Harold Ware, see New York Times, 4 Jan 1925, Section VIII, p. 7, Lement U. Harris, Harold M. Ware (1890-1935), agricultural pioneer USA and USSR [American Institute for Marxist Studies Occasional Paper no. 30 (1978)], and the testimony of Whittaker Chambers before the House Committee on Un-American Activities, Aug. 3, 1948.

Harold Ware's mother, Ella Reeve, known as "Mother Bloor", was a member of the Central Committee of the American Communist Party 1922-1948. See her autobiography, We are many [New York: International Publishers, 1940].

Jessica Smith, Harold Ware's widow, was a daughter of Walter Granville Smith, who called himself "Walter Granville-Smith" (1870-1938), an artist, by his wife Jessie May Stout. Jessica was editor of Soviet Russia Today, and later (by 1937) married John J. Abt, b. 1 May 1904, d. 10 Aug. 1991 [SSDI 061-12-6145], general counsel of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, and later the legal representative of the Communist Party, USA. See Abt's autobiography, Advocate and Activist : Memoirs of an American Communist Lawyer [Urbana, Ill.: University of Illinois Press, 1993]. On pp. 39-40, Abt reports that he was recruited to the Communist Party by Harold Ware, and, on p. xvii, Abt reports that he did not publicly acknowledge his Party membership until the 1980s. Abt's parents were Jacob Abt and Mildred Shire. John Abt's sister, Marion Bachrach (1898-1957), was spokeswoman for the CPUSA.
