The ancestry of HRH The Duchess of Cornwall

compiled by William Addams Reitwiesner

Below is a short summary of the first fourteen generations of the ancestry of the current [2006] Princess of Wales (styled "HRH The Duchess of Cornwall"), using the standard Kekule method of ancestor-numbering.

I'd like to thank Yvonne Demoskoff for her assistance on the French-Canadian material below (with clarification from Denis Beauregard), Alistair Gordon for his contribution of the Peters ancestry, Leo van de Pas for his contribution of the Coltee/Crommelin and Keppel ancestry, Kelsey J. Williams for pointing out the MacNab ancestry, Michael J. Wood for his contribution of the Harrington ancestry, Brian Townsley for pointing out the Hope ancestry, Richard Carruthers-Zurowski for pointing out the Dewar ancestry, John C.MacLean for some New England corrections, Gregory Lauder-Frost for some Scottish corrections, Tim Powys-Lybbe for some Gilmour corrections, and John Blythe Dobson for some MacNab references.

NOTES

1 -- The ancestor list above is greatly expanded from a message I posted to the alt.talk.royalty Usenet newsgroup on 28 August 1996.

See also Gary Boyd Roberts, Notable Kin, vol. I [1998], pp. 87-88.

The Globe tabloid, issue of 26 Feb. 2002, pp. 4-5, says that Camilla married, in a secret ceremony "last month" at Highgrove, Charles, Prince of Wales. This report has not been confirmed elsewhere.

Eustace Parker (1884-1952), a grandson of the 6th Earl of Macclesfield, changed his surname, by Royal License dated 14 Aug. 1920, from Parker to Parker Bowles. Andrew Parker Bowles is his grandson.

Note that the youngest brother of Andrew Parker Bowles, named Richard Parker Bowles, married Camilla Younger, also in 1973. They divorced in 1976, and this other "Mrs Camilla Parker Bowles" subsequently married the Earl of Halifax.

5 -- A number of references claim that the paternal grandmother of Mrs Parker Bowles was named "Sybil Mary Sisson", but this was a different one of the four wives of P. Morton Shand. See Rebecca Tyrrel, Camilla: An Intimate Portrait, where P. Morton Shand is described as an "insatiable Lothario", and quotes the High Court which, at the time of his third divorce in 1931, described him as "a peculiarly shameless litigant".

By Sybil Mary Sisson, P. Morton Shand had a daughter, Elspeth Rosamond Morton Shand, b. 8 Feb. 1932, who married in 1953 a rising politician named Geoffrey Howe. He was created a life peer as Baron Howe of Aberavon, and in 2001 she was created a life peeress as Baroness Howe of Idlicote.

11 -- See the article by Geoffrey Levy in the Saturday, April 2, 2005, issue of the Daily Mail.

15 -- Mrs Keppel, mistress of Edward VII. See below.

236 -- The American Revolution (1775-1783) created not one country but two. Not all of the inhabitants of the thirteen rebellious colonies supported independence, and many persons loyal to the British Crown relocated to Canada, where they were referred to as "United Empire Loyalists". Rev. John Stuart, number 236 above, was one such United Empire Loyalist. Loyalist Lineages of Canada 1783-1983, published by the Toronto Branch of The United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada [Agincourt, Ontario: Generation Press, 1984], treats Rev. Stuart on p. 671.

14346 -- [note by John Blythe Dobson] J. Anspach, "Opschrift in de kerk te Opheusden: Gebroeders van Hoemen," De Navorscher 25 (1875): 534-538, discusses Joachim van Hoemen, Drost of Leede near Kesteren, whose wife's name is recorded somewhat inconsistently as Geertruid or Gerberich van Wijhe, and who were the parents of no. 14339 above. A document of 10 Nov. 1547, translated into English in Edward Jacquett Sellers, Allied Ancestry of the Van Culemborg Family (Philadelphia, 1915), pp. 52-53, makes reference to a "Willem van Huemen, often called Joachim van Huemen," who was also Drost of Leede. It seems to be an open question whether these two drosts with rather similarly-named wives were the same man. The point is interesting because Joachim van Hoemen and Geertruid van Wijhe were parents of no. 14339 above.

FURTHER NOTES

The Duchess of Cornwall was baptized and confirmed an Anglican. While her first husband was a Roman Catholic, and both of her children were baptized and raised Roman Catholic, the wedding of Camilla Shand to Andrew Parker Bowles was an Anglican ceremony performed in an Anglican chapel.

Most of her ancestors were Protestants (her Scottish ancestors were Presbyterians and her English ancestors were Anglicans), but her great-great-grandfather, the (future) 7th Earl of Albemarle (number 28, above), was publicly received into the Roman Catholic Church on Easter Sunday 13 April 1879. The (alleged) deathbed conversion of his father-in-law, Sir Allan MacNab (number 58, above), to the Roman Catholic Church created a public uproar in Canada.

FURTHER NOTES

The following is slightly modified from a message I posted to the alt.talk.royalty Usenet newsgroup on 5 Sept 1996:

There is some question about the paternity of number 7, above, seeing as her mother, number 15, was a mistress of King Edward VII.

Alice Edmonstone (number 15, above) married George Keppel on 1 June 1891. Alice gave birth to a daughter, Violet, on 6 June 1894. Alice met the then-Prince of Wales in 1898 and "soon thereafter" became his mistress (so says the Dictionary of National Biography article on Alice). Alice gave birth to Sonia, Camilla's grandmother (number 7), on 24 May 1900.

Violet, later one of the (ahem) close friends of Vita Sackville-West, put on Royal airs something fierce, though, if the chronology above is accurate, she couldn't have been fathered by the Prince. Sonia's memoirs, published in 1958, are titled "Edwardian Daughter", and this title has been interpreted by some in a "nudge, nudge, wink, wink" manner.

Was Sonia fathered by Edward or George? Legally it was decided when George acknowledged Sonia as his child and gave her his name (Keppel). Genetically? Beats me. Sonia's descendants apparently deny that Edward was her father, and Edward certainly never tried to assert paternity.

If it's true that Sonia was an unacknowledged illegitimate child of Edward VII, then Prince Charles would be a half-second cousin once removed of Camilla, as shown here:

Alexandra == Edward VII =?= Alice
                   George V Sonia
                   George VI Rosalind
                   Elizabeth II Camilla
                   Charles

This (if true) should be no impediment for any future marriage of theirs -- after all, Charles's parents, Philip and Elizabeth, are closer related to each other than that, and nobody tried to scuttle that marriage on grounds of consanguinity.

I hope that Edward was not Sonia's father, because it's through George Keppel that Camilla gets her North American (Canada, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania) ancestry.
