NOTES

1 -- See http://www.tvtome.com/tvtome/servlet/PersonDetail/personid-5769.

Recent biographies of Jane Wyman and of her husband Ronald Reagan have done much to unravel her correct parentage and ancestry, but there are still a number of unanswered questions.

After the death of her father in January 1922, when she was five years old, Sarah Jane Mayfield was placed, apparently by her mother, in the home of Richard and Emma Fulks. There does not seem to have been any formal transfer of custody or name change, but when the child was registered for first grade, at the Noyes School in St. Joseph, on 10 Sept. 1923, she was registered as "Sarah Jane Fulks" by Emma Fulks.

Later, after Sarah Jane Fulks started a career in show business, she used the name "Jane Wyman". Several theories have been put forward as to where the "Wyman" name came from, including an alleged early marriage to an Ernest Eugene Wyman/Weyman. A more plausible source for the name might be the fact that Richard Fulks was the second husband of Emma Fulks neé Reise. Her first husband was a physician named M. F. Weyman, by whom she had several children and from whom she was divorced.

2 -- Manning Mayfield is enumerated twice in the 1920 Census, once as unmarried and living with his parents in St. Joseph, Missouri, and again with his wife and daughter in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

3 -- For some of her ancestry, see the Ancestral File, at AFN: 236T-NRJ.

44 -- Alexander Milliner was one of the last survivors of the Continental Army. He served in the Continental Army under the name of "Alexander Maroney" (his step-father was Florence Maroney).
