The Ancestors of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (b. 1947)

by William Addams Reitwiesner

The following material on the immediate ancestry of Sen. Hillary Clinton should not be considered either exhaustive or definitive, but rather as a first draft.

In her autobiography, Living History, Sen. Clinton describes her maternal grandmother as "one of nine children from a family of French Canadian, Scottish and Native American ancestry". No records have been found to support this claimed Native American ancestry.

Robert Battle and Yvonne Demoskoff contributed to this report.

5 -- In her autobiography, Living History, Sen. Clinton makes several references to her "formidable" paternal grandmother, Hannah Jones Rodham, and describes Hannah's background of "black-haired Welsh coal miners". Despite this, a number of genealogists claim that Sen. Clinton's paternal grandmother was Mary Bynum Jarnagin, born in Tennessee with distinguished Colonial ancestry.

It's not known where this error started, but Mary Bynum Jarnagin married Hugh Rodman, not Hugh Rodham. See, for instance, http://www.tnhilbillie.net/tn/jefferson/databases/lyle/miltonjarnagin.html and http://www.angelfire.com/realm3/ruvignyplus/026b.html.

26 -- obituary in The Elgin Daily News 16 Jul 1916, p. 5: "John Monk, former town collector and for nearly forty years a cigar maker in this city, died at the Old Soldiers' Home, Danville, Ill., yesterday afternoon. His body will be brought to this city tonight. He had been ill for nearly two years. He gave up active work three years ago. Some time following his election as town collector a year ago, he was taken to St. Joseph's hospital for treatment. Three months ago he returned to the soldiers' home. Mr. Monk was well known in Elgin, especially among older residents. He was a veteran of the civil war and for many years a familiar figure at the reunions of the 'boys of '61'. Besides his widow, he is survived by a son, John Monk, of South Elgin, and two daughters, Mrs. Ed Howell and Mrs. Anno Andresen of this city. He also has several brothers."

2034 -- Jean Valiquet was "banni à perpétuité de l'Île de Montréal 07-09-1679 pour inceste" [banned in perpetuity from Montréal for incest]. René Jetté, Dictionnaire genealogique de familles du Québec des origines a 1730 [1983], p. 1109.

http://www.capauxdiamants.org/genealogie/Details.asp?

The daughter with whom Valiquet was "déclaré atteint et convaincu davoir eu copulation charnelle" was Marie-Nicole, who married Louis Ledoux. Hélène [number 1017, above] was one of the two he "davoir attenté de ravir".
