In 1954, one Daniel Fry claimed to have had (in 1950) multiple contacts with an alien and to have taken a ride in an alien spaceship. Fry then founded an organization called "Understanding" which published a newsletter by the same name. The July 1962 issue of Understanding, available on the Web at http://danielfry.com/index.php?id=1170, reports that the vice president of the Enid, Okla., "unit" of Understanding was Delbert M. Hern.

After Bernett's death, Delbert remarried. On 31 March 1970, during an after-dinner argument, Delbert shot his wife in the ear with a .32 caliber Spanish pistol, killing her, then shot himself in the head with the same gun, killing himself. See New York Times 1970 Apr 2, p. 2, and Washington Post 1970 Apr 2, p. A3.

FURTHER NOTES

The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) publishes a Patriot Index, a list of persons whose honorable service in the cause of independence during the American Revolution renders their female descendants eligible for membership in the NSDAR. Several ancestors of Evan Bayh appear in the Patriot Index, including:

    Andrew Evans (number 72)
    Nicholas Fain (number 146)

While Mr. Bayh is not eligible for membership in the NSDAR (by not being female), he is eligible for membership in the equivalent organization for men, the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.
