WHO IS MRS. SALLY MIERS?

The identity of the mother of Harriet(t) Miers is somewhat problematic. According to the Texas birth index, Harriet Ellan Miers was born 10 Aug 1945 in Dallas Co., daughter of Harris Wood Miers and Sallie Dale Richardson. However, the records that appear therein for her siblings all have slightly different names for the mother (name of the mother given in parentheses after each date of birth):
children of Harris Wood Miers (all born Dallas Co.):

Catherine Elizabeth Wood Miers 16 Nov 1932 (Erma Grace Richardson)
Harris Wood Miers Jr. 5 Oct 1939 (Erma Grace Richardson)
Robert Lee Miers 23 Feb 1943 (Erma Grace Richardson)
Harriett Ellan Miers 10 Aug 1945 (Sallie Dale Richardson)
Jeb Stewart Miers 5 Mar 1951 (Sally Grace Richardson)
There are three different names given for the mother: Erma Grace Richardson (3 times), Sallie Dale Richardson (once), and Sally Grace Richardson (once). Discounting the Sallie-Sally spelling difference, the first name is either Erma or Sally and the middle name either Grace or Dale. An appeal to the possibility of two different wives of Harris W. Miers is misguided, given two facts: (1) the mother of Harris Wood Miers, Jr., is called Erma Grace Richardson in the TX birth index and Sally Grace Richardson in Who's Who in America (1984-5, p. 2259); and (2), more importantly, in an 1991 story in the Dallas Morning News (repeated 5 Oct 2005), the following appears concerning Ms. Miers' family: "Harris and Sally Miers had five children spread over some 20 years. Harriet Ellan was their fourth..." ( http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/nation/stories/100405dnnatmiers.bab1b698.html).

The most reasonable explanation (at least according to this author's way of thinking) is that her birth name was Erma Grace Richardson and that "Sally" was a name she later adopted, either officially or as a nickname that stuck. Perhaps "Dale" was a mistaken reading of "Grace." (Of course, there is always the possibility that her actual name was something along the lines of "Erma Sarah Grace Dale Richardson.")

So, who was this Erma/Sally Grace Richardson? There are only two solid pieces of evidence to work from, along with some supposition. The first solid piece of evidence is that as of 5 Oct 2005 she was 91 years old, and so was born about 1913/14 ( http://www.projo.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/nation/stories/100405dnnatmiersprofile.b97f9cb3.html). The second solid piece of evidence is that as of the 1930 census she had not yet married Harris W. Miers, as he was listed as single in that census (University Park, Dallas Co., TX, e.d. 99, sheet 31a). However, given that they had their first child just two years later, they must have married shortly after the 1930 census was taken; it was thus likely that they were living fairly close to each other in 1930.

The following is a list of the possible Richardson young women in the 1930 census (all of the (white) Erma/Irma/Emma Richardsons who were born 1913/14; while there were numerous Sarah/Sally/Sallie Richardsons; none who were the right age and race were living in TX):
First name(s) Place Parents

Erma Dallas, Dallas Co., TX Frank M. & Erma
Erma V. Davis, Shenandoah Co., VA William Y. & Bessie J.
Irma F. Marlborough, Cheshire Co., NH Hubert J. & Nettie E.
Irma I. Spring Green, Sauk Co., WI Austin L. & ___
As mentioned above, while there were a great many Sarah/Sally/Sallie Richardsons of the right age (too many to easily include here), none were living in TX. Indeed, there was only one Erma/Irma/Emma Richardson of the right age living in TX; the rest are included merely because there were few enough that an exhaustive list is feasible. Given that singularity, and the additional fact that she was living in the same county as the man she would marry sometime within the next year and a half, it seems a fairly safe assumption that Erma Richardson of Dallas was the future Mrs. Sally Miers.
