NOTES

1 -- Thomas Farmar was the first mayor of New Brunswick, New Jersey. William A. Whitehead, Contributions to the early history of Perth Amboy [New York: D. Appleton, 1856], p. 93, says that Thomas Farmar "for some time before his death was insane." William H. Benedict, "Thomas Farmar, First Mayor of New Brunswick, N.J." Proceedings of the New Jersey Historical Society, vol. XIII, repeats the statement but adds "I find no proof of this."

6 -- For his career, see Robert R. Rea, Major Robert Farmar of Mobile [Tuscaloosa: University of Alabama Press, 1990].

Major Farmar accumulated at least 10,000 acres in British West Florida. The (ultimately unsuccessful) legal proceedings whereby his heirs tried to claim some of this property included an Act of the US Congress [Statutes at Large VI:761] and a pair of lawsuits appealed to the US Supreme Court [50 U.S. 421 and 50 U.S. 451].

7 d -- Hannah is occasionally said to have been the Hannah Farmer who married Ebenezer Walker in 1761 and had seven children and descendants, but this is not true. Hannah Farmar is mentioned in the wills of her mother's sister Hannah Peck (dated 6 April 1780, proved New York 28 Dec. 1787) and her mother's sister's husband, Thomas Ellison (dated 16 Sept. 1793, proved New York 1 Feb. 1794) without a husband.

15 -- In the litigation relating to the estate of Major Robert Farmar (see above), he is usually referred to as "Louis de Vobiscey".

18 -- Abraham Jarvis was the Protestant Episcopal Bishop of Connecticut.

32 -- Samuel Farmar Jarvis was a noted theologian. In May 1839, his wife presented a petition for a divorce on grounds of cruelty and unbecoming conduct to the Connecticut State Legislature, which resulted in a trial before a committee of the General Assembly, who refused to grant the petition. See The Great Divorce Case! [New York: 1839] for the testimony.

40 -- Hiester Clymer was a US Representative from Pennsylvania.

66 -- Théodore Maunoir, a Swiss surgeon, was one of the co-founders of the organization now known as the International Committee of the Red Cross.

68 c -- His suicide brought to an end his slander lawsuits against various New York clubmen who accused him of practices similar to those of Oscar Wilde. See Chicago Daily Tribune, 6 Oct. 1904, p. 1, Los Angeles Times, 6 Oct. 1904, p. 3, and The New York Times, 11 Oct. 1904.

69 -- For a biography of Sir Thomas Reed, see ODNB.

70 -- For a biography of Thomas Thomson, see ODNB.

80 -- Blair Lee was a US Senator from Maryland 1914-1917.

83 -- Frederick Brooke was a well-known architect. His wife was national president of the Girl Scouts.

118 -- For a biography of Cecil Alexander, the hymn writer, see ODNB. For a biography of William Alexander, Archbishop of Armagh, see ODNB.

129 a -- Blair Lee III was Acting Governor of Maryland 1977-1979.

132 -- George Tucker Smith was a Rear Admiral in the US Navy.

143 -- Struthers Burt was a noted poet and rancher.

143 a -- Nathaniel Burt was a well-known writer.

169 -- Jessica Weis was a US Representative from New York 1959-1963.

171 a -- Michael Bowen was Archbishop of Southwark.
