NOTES

1 -- Col. Billopp's home in Tottenville, Staten Island, was used for the Staten Island Peace Conference, on 11 Sept. 1776, which was convened in an attempt to end the Revolutionary War. See http://www.conferencehouse.org for further details.

Col. Christopher Billopp was one of the original United Empire Loyalists. As such, all of his descendants can affix the initials U.E. to their names. For further details, see (for example) the website of The United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada at http://www.uelac.org.

Col. Billopp was buried in the Old Cemetery, at the head of King's Street, St. John, New Brunswick. The monumental inscription is:
Sacred to the memory of the
          Honorable Christopher Billop
a member of His Majesty's Council
          in this Province, whose uncompro-
          mising Loyalty and distinguished
          exertions as a Lieut. Colonel
in the Royal Cause during the American
rebellion obliged him, at the termination
of that contest, to abandon without com-
pensation, his hereditary property on Staten
Island and retire with his family
to this colony, wherein he since resided
          at St John, universally respected.

He died on the 28th day of March 1827
in the ninetieth year of his age.

Christopher Billopp's will was dated City of Saint John, St. John Co., 29 Aug. 1820, codicil dated 28 Nov. 1822, proved 9 Aug. 1827. See R. Wallace Hale, Early New Brunswick probate records, 1785-1835 [1989], pp. 32-33.
